A WELCOME SURPRISE
A few years ago, Lloyd found himself in need of housing.
He was given a home with Progressive Housing Society, which provides housing and support to those facing mental health issues and homelessness in the Burnaby area. He was expecting just housing, and couldn’t believe his luck when he found out about the daily delivery of fresh, healthy food from Food Stash; everything from veggies and fruit to meat, dairy or bread. A welcome surprise!
Right away Lloyd recognized the benefits of having access to healthy food - often sharing tips with other residents, like the advantages of yogurt for your gut health. And after a while, Lloyd and his neighbours really looked forward to the Food Stash drop-offs. Our drivers got to know the residents and what food they liked and would bring their favourite items whenever they could.
MORE THAN JUST FOOD
Lloyd believes food can lead to recovery. Whether someone is experiencing addiction, mental health issues or financial trouble, food is an essential step in the right direction. When an individual is fuelled with healthy, personally appropriate food, they have a clear mind. They can better access resources to deal with health issues that could have been holding them back, and ultimately make decisions that positively affect their lives.
We all deserve options when it comes to our eating habits - but one basic option should be access to healthy, fresh, perishable food, not just canned goods and processed food.
Lloyd says:
“Food Stash’s services help people not fall through the cracks and ultimately can save their life.”
Lloyd has now moved on from Progressive Housing, but from a young age he was taught the importance of giving back to the community when you are able to do so. He’s now a regular Food Stash volunteer and his contribution is so impactful - both for him and our team!
