Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue: Building a Just, Resilient, and Sustainable Future
On February 9th, 2024, the Vancouver Food Justice Coalition, in collaboration with Food Stash and other key stakeholders, organized a dialogue at Vancouver City Hall. This gathering aimed to address pressing issues surrounding food justice and sustainability within the City.
The event brought together elected officials, community members, and organizations to delve into critical topics, including:
Cultural Food Assets: Exploring the diverse culinary heritage of Vancouver and its significance in shaping a vibrant food landscape.
Urban Agriculture: Discussing strategies for promoting urban farming initiatives to enhance local food production and accessibility.
Place-based Community Food Programming: Highlighting the importance of community-driven initiatives in addressing food insecurity.
Food Waste and Recovery: Showcasing the amount of food waste and the already established food waste prevention network that is currently undersupported.
The overarching goal of the event was to demonstrate how addressing food-related challenges aligns with the City of Vancouver's priorities, including combating climate change, stimulating economic growth through job creation, supporting local businesses, and addressing food insecurity.
Mount Pleasant Food Network
The MPFN was formed in 2014 and is comprised of non-profits, organizations, and community groups that actively support the health and well-being of Mount Pleasant residents through various food programs. The network is dedicated to promoting an accessible, just and sustainable food system, and is part of the larger Vancouver Neighbourhood Food Network.
This system of nested networks provides the resilience every city needs: we can spread information quickly, share resources, learn more from one another’s shared experiences and count on each other’s support.

With immense gratitude to the GHG Accounting team, we can now credibly and transparently say our food rescue work avoids more emissions than it produces.
