Double Up for Zero Hunger and half the waste

You might have noticed Food Stash Foundation is running its first ever fundraising campaign to grow our efforts in reducing food waste and feeding our community. But what’s that campaign name all about?

Why ‘Double Up’?

Thanks to the generosity of a donor in your community, all donations received by Food Stash Foundation between Nov. 16, 2020 and Jan. 1, 2021 will be doubled up to $15,000.

Why ‘Zero Hunger & Half the Waste’?

While we feel very connected to our local Food Stash community, we’re always thinking about how our efforts relate to the rest of Canada and even the planet. We always have an ear to the ground when it comes to food security and sustainability at the local, provincial, national and international levels...

The Issues We Face

What if together we could end hunger and cut food wast in half_.png

According to Stats Canada, 1 in 7 Canadians experience food insecurity. This is up from pre-pandemic levels, and is believed to be worse than the numbers portray. At the same time, 58% of food produced in Canada is lost or wasted.

Before the pandemic we were already seeing extreme waste. So much so, that if food waste was a country, it would be the 3rd largest greenhouse gas emitter on the planet.

Our Shared Targets & Goals

Pre-pandemic, the United Nations created (and remains committed to) their Zero Hunger Target by 2030 as part of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Along those lines, Canada committed to the UN’s 2030 Agenda goal to “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.” In other words, Canada promised to cut food waste in half by 2030.

Sustainable Development Goals

At Food Stash we plan to do our part in achieving these goals!

We also know that if we cut food waste, and properly sort recycling and organics, we’ll see a dramatic decrease in greenhouse gas emissions:

According to the National Zero Waste Council, if Canada cuts food loss and waste in half and ensures all food packaging is properly composted or recycled, we could see a 48% reduction in the 56.5 million metric tonnes of CO2 produced annually by Canada's food loss and waste.

with Your Support…

We have big plans for growing our impact sustainably, but we need your help! Your donation will help us:

Full truck of food double up for zero hunger and half the waste
  • Expand supplier partnerships to include more food producers (as food production accounts for 24% of Canada's food waste, while retailers account for 4%)

  • Expand the number of nonprofits we deliver rescued food to, with a focus on underserved locations

  • Expand food box program memberships to assist more households experiencing hunger

  • Produce and share digital educational material on nutrition and reducing food waste at home (where 14% of Canada's food waste takes place)

  • Track emission produced by our deliveries to more accurately depict our net impact and inform our operations

  • Continue our Pedal to Plate project well into the future, delivering more rescued food by electric trike
