What is Food Access all about?
Good food belongs to all of us. In Canada, we throw away 2.3 MILLION tons of edible food per year, even though 1 in 7 Canadians don’t have enough food to be healthy. At Food Stash, we’ve seen first-hand that there is abundance; the problem is unequal access.
We rescue 70,000 lbs of high-quality surplus food a month - think about a humpback-whale-sized amount of fresh fruits, veggies, dairy, meat, and more - and ensure it reaches people who need and value it.
This is good food that would otherwise be thrown away due to overstocking, cancelled orders, an approaching best before date, or not meeting aesthetic standards. As we do this work, we research and advocate for a more just and sustainable food system where food rescue is no longer needed.
We all need reliable and dignified access to good, healthy food to flourish. Food Stash volunteer Lloyd knows the importance of this; Having access to good food helped give him the stability to make decisions and get back on his feet. The power of food is what inspires him to donate his time to Food Stash each week.
With your support, we created Vancouver’s first pay-what-you-feel Rescued Food Market and it’s open to everyone, without means tests, eligibility requirements or restrictions.

Why Donate Today?
The work we’re doing together is more important than ever. When COVID-19 hit in March 2020, Food Stash, along with many food security organizations and nonprofits nationwide, rose to the challenge of ensuring $32.85 billion worth of food got to those who needed it.
The pandemic revealed just how vulnerable so many of us are to the inequalities and injustices in society. It also strengthened Food Stash’s resolve to make positive changes in society as a whole. When we collaborate with partner organizations and networks, we share our knowledge and resources to tackle the root causes of poverty and inequality.
And your support is also part of the urgent fight against Climate Change! Together with our partners, we’re working to eliminate the carbon emissions resulting from food waste.

Double our Rescued Food Market hours
Create an animated community space to celebrate food, learn about food waste and promote a more just and circular food system
