The whole month of June 2022 hosts the “Great Canadian Giving Challenge,” which means that every $1 donated online through Canada Helps is a chance for your favourite charity to win $20,000.* Even though only one charity can win the $20,000 prize (announced by draw on Canada Day, Jul 1, 2022), countless Canadian charities will benefit!
As charities continue to support our most vulnerable community members in the face of tragedies like covid-19 and the war in Ukraine, food access charities, mental health organizations, emergency shelters, and other frontline charities need urgent support. This isn’t news, but something you might not know is you have a chance to make an even greater difference this summer.
The Great Canadian Giving Challenge was created as a way to help your favourite charities get through a difficult time of the year without disrupting the life-changing services and programs they offer to the community.
How can you create lasting change for many connected causes at once?
Charities and grassroots organizations know that everything is connected. We know that good health is only possible when we protect the environment, provide adequate housing, and ensure everyone has access to safe and accessible basic goods and services.
In Canada, we throw away 2.3 MILLION tons of edible food per year. This food waste contributes to climate change and environmental degradation…it’s also a symptom of a broken food system that treats food as a commodity and limits peoples’ and communities’ access to food.
Food Stash Foundation rescues 70,000 lbs of high-quality surplus food a month - about $179,550 worth of quality fruits, veggies, dairy, meat, and more - and provide it to people and community partner organizations who need it. This is good food that would otherwise be thrown away due to overstocking, cancelled orders, an approaching best-before date, or not meeting aesthetic standards.

Did you know? Food Stash Foundation is grateful to work with over 30 local community partner organizations to create positive impacts for an estimated 14,000 people every week!
What Food Stash Foundation could do with $20,000:
Help to purchase new cold storage space for all the food we rescue
Help pay rent for our space to host the Rescued Food Market, sort and safely store rescued food, and prepare Rescued Food Box deliveries
Help pay fair wages to the staff coordinating this essential work and supporting our 100+ volunteers!
